Dear Grandma
Dec 18, 01:11 PM
I know it’s been a while since we last “spoke”. Know that hardly a day goes by that I don’t think of you, see you, appreciate you – often in the strangest instances. Like drying my feet off before getting out of the tub, snacking on coconut or chocolate chips, and of course, when knitting and crocheting.
James’ Grandpa passed away this past Friday. He had been in the hospital for quite a while, and we were planning to go up to Saskatoon on Saturday to visit him because it had been a few weeks since we had been there. He had just turned 90.
I’m reminded of the time spent with you in the hospital before you died. I remember sitting in your room with you, crocheting while you rested. I was working on a baby blanket, it was a rainbow of hexagons, I loved making the hexagons but dreaded the seaming.
I remember getting a cloth to wipe your brow, trying to comfort you any way I could, and you smiled at me and said that I made a good nurse. I knew that I would never be a nurse, but I knew I desperately wanted to make you feel better for all of the times you looked after me.
I remember how Grandpa dressed up each morning, usually in a suit, to come to the hospital and spend the day. No matter the highs or lows in your marriage, I admired that he showed that love and respect for you.
I remember all of the people that came to visit you in the hospital. They came from far and wide – you touched that many people’s lives. I remember the sun shining in your hospital room and the warmth of companionship that people showed to you.
I miss you Grandma. I am so thankful for all of the time we spent together, all of the things you taught me, all of the patience you showed me, all of the things you made for me.
And I wish that you could know Barrett and Charlotte. You would’ve adored them. They’ve been such a blessing to me, and to my Dad. He’s the most incredible Grandpa to them, you would be proud. And you would’ve loved James, he’s a wonderful husband and father.
Please watch over them, Grandma. Send our love to Obbie, and Adlor, and Erin…
